NSBE@USU and Aachen University win CDO 2011/2012
Part of the CDO Team at 2012 Convention. L-R: Rahel Beyene, Patricia Ayaa, Onipaba Onipaba-Baafi (from Aachen), Tee Ogunnaike, Maureen Kesaano, Eduardo Monzon.
Participating for the very first time, NSBE@USU won the 2011/2012 NSBE Consulting Design Olympiad (NSBE), together with their counterparts from Aachen University in Germany. The two teams were working on a project design titled "Solar powered water pumping system for rural under-developed African communities, Case Study: Mbeere Community, Kenya." The project was a pilot study aimed at supplying potable water to 50 households in the community, which for a long time has suffered from water related diseases. If the design is successfully implemented, the students hope that it will be applied to the rest of the community.

Welcome Message from NSBE@USU PresidentWelcome to the National Society of Black Engineers – Utah State University Chapter! 2011/2012 has been a very fruitful school year for NSBE@USU. As NSBE@USU President, my main goal was to increase membership and participation in NSBE activities, increase awareness of NSBE@USU to both the local Utah community and the NSBE community, as well as raise funds to facilitate NSBE@USU’s activities. To facilitate communication, we set up an email address [email protected] with the school, created a facebook page, as well as this website to help relay information and update the public on our activities .
This school year, we managed to achieve 1st place for the 2011/2012 NSBE CDO competition after participating for the first time. We were also able to raise money for members to attend both national and regional conferences, and had members participating in the Technical Research exhibition at both conferences. Also, we are proud to have our 1st ever NSBE officer (Rahel Beyene) on the Regional (Region 6) Executive Board (REB) who is the 2012/2013 Mountain Zone Chair. We hope this will put Utah State out there and as a result help build a stronger NSBE@USU. In the next academic year, I hope to see an increase in membership and applications for NSBE scholarships. I would also like to see an increase in outreach programs (T.O.R.C.H) and a well established retention program at Utah State University. It has been an exciting experience for me as President and I hope the energy in the members this year will live on and lead them to do great things. GO AGGIES! |
